We are certainly glad to present this lovely washed Mexican coffee, our first of the season, from producer Jesus Santos, from the San Pedro el Alto community in Oaxaca. We find everything that we could hope for in the best of Mexican coffee, namely a very sweet and more mild profile, with some deep yet easy-drinking complexity. We love the sweet, green agave nectar that we taste throughout when sipping on this one, as well as its apple blossom florality, and rich, buttery hazelnut body.

Jesus’ plot is located at 1.500 masl on the outskirts of the San Pedro el Alto community in the Oaxaca region of Mexico, in the Sierra Madre Oriental mountains, where he grows caturra and mundo novo with the help of his wife and family.

Caturra is a natural mutation of the bourbon variety, and was first discovered in the Minas Gerais region of Brazil between 1915 and 1918. It is common throughout South and Central America, and is known for its flavor quality at altitude.

Mundo novo is a naturally occurring hybrid between typica and bourbon, which originates from the Sao Paulo region of Brazil. The seeds from this hybrid were initially planted in the municipality of Novo Mundo, which is where its name comes from. It was first identified in 1943, and further selections for quality and viability were completed by 1952. Today, it is still primarily grown in Brazil, with some presence in Peru as well, and very little representation in Central America. Mundo novo is characterized by high potential for cup quality, tall stature, and high productivity. It is, however, relatively susceptible to pests and diseases.
